Troubleshooting in case of wrong orientation of photos

Written by Florian Triller-Windisch

Photo Orientation and EXIF Data

Each photo saved from a camera device contains additional data known as EXIF data. These details include the type of camera used, its settings - and the orientation of the device at the time the photo was taken.

Operating systems, browsers and platforms like Facebook or X may use this data to display the image correctly. However, some tools or platforms misinterpret or ignore this information, which can result in the image being shown with the wrong orientation.

Correcting the Orientation of a Photo

With Swat.io (Medium license or higher)

Starting from the Medium license, Swat.io's integrated image editing tool is available, allowing you to correct the orientation directly in the Composer:

  1. Upload the affected image in the Composer.

  2. Hover over the image and click the pencil icon.

  3. Select Crop.

  4. Use the Rotation slider to rotate the image to the correct orientation.

  5. Save the change – the new orientation will be permanently applied to the image.

Without integrated Swat.io image editing tool

Open the image in an image editing application (for example GIMP). Many apps automatically detect - based on the EXIF data - whether the photo needs to be rotated and will also offer to correct the orientation for you.

After making the correction, save the image again to apply the changes to the image permanently.

If you then upload the corrected image to Swat.io, it should be displayed and published with the correct orientation.
