How do I customize link previews for Facebook link posts?
To combat fake news, Facebook does not allow link previews for arbitrary websites to be customized freely. By default, the preview is generated automatically using the site's Open Graph tags (learn more).
However, if you want to customize previews for domains you control (e.g., your own website or blog), you must complete a Domain Verification. This process confirms to Facebook that you're authorized to customize link previews for the specified domain.
Blocked previews for “Press Publisher Domains"
Facebook often restricts link previews for news websites ("Press Publisher Domains") within the EU. This usually affects the preview images or text snippets.
You can lift this restriction by successfully verifying your domain. To check if your domain is affected, use Facebook's Sharing Debugger. An affected link preview might look like this:
How do I perform domain verification?
Domain verification is done through the Facebook Business Manager. Detailed instructions can be found here.
Follow these steps:
Open your Business Manager and navigate to "Business Settings" → "Brand Safety" → "Domains".
Click "Add New" and enter your domain name.
Tip: Use your top-level domain, e.g. yourdomain.com to also include subdomains like blog.yourdomain.com in one verification.
3. Select a verification method:
DNS Text Record (recommended)
HTML File Upload
4. After successful verification, connect your Facebook Pages to the domain:
Navigate to "Connected Assets".
Select all Facebook Pages authorized to edit link previews for your domain.
Important: Without this step, you won’t be able to create customized link previews.
